Chestnut Seedlings (Castenea spp.)
Our trees are 2 year bare root seedlings, size 2’ - 4’+
See Chestnut Family Descriptions for in-depth descriptions on seedling parentage.
Soil: Chestnut trees require well-drained acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 6.3 being highly recommended.
Mature Height: Depends upon genetics. Chinese-type orchard form, 40-50’ to timber-form 70’+
Pollination: 2 trees required for pollination
Our chestnut sources: Wintergreen Tree Farm, Route 9 Cooperative, HARC at University of Missouri, Red Fern Farm, Prairie Grove
We source our chestnut seed from some of the oldest chestnut plantings across the midwestern U.S. that represent a huge diversity of different seed sources, climatic conditions, and selection criteria. We offer seedlings from the most resilient, earliest dropping, and consistently heavy bearing trees that each of these organizations has to offer.
We actively evaluate seed collection sites and progeny to get a clearer understanding of how traits are passed down through generations. We learn from growers and ground truth the information with offspring. We aim to select based on the realities of the market, realities of orchard efficiency, and resilience to pests, diseases, and erratic weather patterns. Through applying our own constellation of evaluation criteria we offer a genetically diverse selection of exceptional seedlings.
Our SELECT ORCHARD BLEND is a mix of diverse seedlings that we will custom tailor to your farm or orchard based on your climate, planting objectives and our thorough knowledge of the seedling parents. Most of our customers prefer this cost-effective option. Please fill out this form for this option.
